2nd Annual Journey DanceSport Tournament

On February 26, 2017 the 2nd Annual Journey DanceSport Tournament Long Beach, Ca. was held at the Long Beach Convention Center’s Seaside Ballroom. One hundred eighty competitive DanceSport athletes gathered to participate for their opportunity to qualify for the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games July 13-15 at the Great Wolf Lodge in Garden Grove, California.

The morning began with a parade of Athletes led by the Journey DanceSport Ambassadors and was followed by the National Anthem being sung by a very talented student who studies at the Orange County School of Arts, Alexa Kushner. As a Blast to the Past, I had the privilege of introducing a former DanceSport Olympian from 2003, Samantha Saffir. Samantha is the owner of Beverly Hills Ballroom and an esteemed Adjudicator. A full day of competition was scheduled consisting of single and multi-dances of Smooth, Rhythm, Int. Standard and Latin interspersed with dance formations of 3 to 20 children. Journey is one of a very few DanceSport competitions that features Single Student dance. We are excited that single students embrace the love of dance and take learning their syllabus very seriously and We encourage them to showcase their knowledge by dancing independently to be judged on their own merit without a partner. One of our young PreTeen competitors, Daniel Novakov , recently won the World Solo (Single) Dance Title at Paris Worlds.

Journey rolled out the new Dancesport Point System which is designed in the likeness of the European ranking system which determines the level of ability for each dancer as they compete. As DanceSport continues to grow in the AAU more competitions will be added to the Journey Point Circuit. Soon Scholarships and other rewards will be added to assist the youth in their dance education.

As part of our AAU Cares Initiative Journey has adopted the National Bullying Prevention Center to promote awareness of Kindness, Inclusion and Acceptance. All children should be “Free to be Me”. As we grow and reach out to each other, we hope to educate parents and coaches about Bullies and how they can help their children grow strong and stand up for themselves.

Join us as we Journey to the West Coast AAU Junior Olympic Games in July. Save the Date July 13-15th and plan to be there to cheer on our dedicated youth as they compete for the precious Gold Medals!
